Roy Lichtenstein

If any single artist can be said to epitomize American pop painting, that artist is Roy Lichtenstein. His giant enlargements of comic-strip frames made an immediate and international impact on the art world; his retrospective show at the Tate Gallery was one of the best attended exhibitions to be held there in recent years. This survey, which was prepared in the closest collaboration with the artist, follows Lichtenstein’s development from the first emergence of the style by which he is known until 1970. It contains reproductions of nearly 200 of his paintings and sculptures: each work is displayed on a full page, in proportion to its actual size, and up to eight colours have been used in order to obtain the maximum fidelity. This book resembles in many ways an original from Lichtenstein’s studio.
