Edgar degas

Edgar Degas belonged to the founder generation of the Impressionists. However, as opposed to the other painters in the group he never submitted himself to the idea of communal work. He did not place nature and the landscape in the forefront of his work, but instead chose the figure. He refused to work out of doors and preferred the seclusion of his studio.
Light, one of the basic elements of Impressionist painting, only plays a subordinate role in his pictures.
However, he was one of the great figures in this epoch and, for posterity, a well-loved artist whose dancers are known all over the world.
There has been an increased interest in his work in the last decades, although attention has been diverted to different areas of his oeuvre. This book attempts to correspond to this new outlook with clear texts and excellent picture reproductions.
