At the end of the thirteenth century, a Spanish Jew, Moses ben Shem Tov, of Leon, wrote a monumental work, the Zohar, which took its place with the Hebrew Bible and the Talmud as one of the essential works of Jewish literature.
Three books of the Zohar notably the Book of the Mystery, the Holy Assemblies and the Assembly of the Tabernacle are particularly recondite, and mystics have expended an enormous amount of effort
‘explaining’ their meaning.
This book puts forward the exciting and provocative theory that the texts describe a machine – for making the mysterious manna which sustained the Israelites in the wilderness.
In order to develop the theory, it was necessary to undertake a fresh translation of the texts, which were written in a putative Aramaic, termed by Sassoon and Dale ‘Zoharese’
